Twenty-six years of charted stitches

Needlepoint Now Magazine has been part of the needlepoint community for over twenty-six years. In that time it has published hundreds of projects, and alongside them the stitch guides and charts that make those projects workable — thousands of charted stitches in all.

Those charts were scattered across years of back issues. Stitch School gathers them, sorts them by family, and gives each one something the printed page never could: a video of the stitch being worked.

Why the books and the videos come together

A chart tells you where the needle goes. It cannot easily show you thread path, rhythm, tension, or what to do when a full repeat will not fit against a painted edge. Those are the things stitchers actually get stuck on, and they are much easier to watch than to read.

So every stitch in every Stitch School book is charted, photographed as a finished sample, and filmed. The chart in the book links directly to its own lesson on this site. Buying a book gives you both — there is no separate video purchase, and no version of the book without the lessons.

Who makes it

Stitch School is produced by Andrea, Marisa and Karen at AMK Publications — the same team behind the magazine. The stitches are drawn from work the magazine has charted and published over more than two decades, gathered and re-checked for the series.

What we publish

How the books work

Each book is a PDF you download and keep, exactly like a printed one. The purchase also opens a full year of access to the video lesson for every stitch in that book, and creates your account here automatically. After the first year you can extend your video access year by year if you want to; nothing renews on its own.

The books are meant to be used, not shelved. Most people stitch with the video open beside them on a phone or tablet propped next to the canvas.

What AMK Publications cares about

A stitch chart is only useful if it is right. Every stitch in the series is re-checked against the original magazine charting before it goes into a book, and then worked on camera — which is its own form of proofreading, because a chart with an error in it will not stitch.

We also try to be straight about what you are buying. The price on the page is the price you pay. The book is yours permanently. The video access runs for a year and then stops unless you choose to extend it, and nothing is taken from you automatically. There is no upsell buried in the checkout and no separate charge for the lessons.

If something in a book or a lesson is unclear, we would rather hear about it than not. Corrections make the next volume better.

Where to start

If you are new to the series, start with Volume 1. Background is the largest area on most canvases and the part that takes the longest, so it is where a wider stitch repertoire changes the most about your finished work — and it is the volume most people come back to.

Everything AMK Publications puts out is built to be worked from, not admired. You do not need any special equipment beyond what you already own: canvas, tapestry needles, stretcher bars, and threads you like working with. Every stitch in the book is charted for the usual range of 10 to 18 mesh.
